Special issue of Peace, Conflict & Development at University of Bradford released

With the end of military dictatorships in the Southern Cone and the signing of peace accords that followed the civil wars in Central America, most violent conflicts in Latin America have been considered to belong to the past. Consequently, the region has been overlooked by peace researchers.

World military spending falls, but China, Russia’s spending rises

New SIPRI data on military expenditure

According to figures released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) on 15 April 2013, the Global Day of Action on Military Spending, world military expenditure totalled $1.75 trillion in 2012, a fall of 0.5 per cent in real terms since 2011.

UN Human Rights Council Working Group seeks to codify right to peace

The first session of the Open-ended Working Group took place from 18 to 21 February 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. In her opening speech, Chairperson of the Group Mona Zuficar said that "despite differences, there is growing consensus that the right to peace we are seeking to codify, does not only include negative peace (absence of direct physical violence and war) but also positive peace which addrsses the conditions for just and sustainable peace and enables building an environment conducive to social justice, respectful of human dignity and protective of all human rights" (source)

2 PhD scholarships

New issue of 'New Routes - A journal of peace research and action' on civil society and the concept of ‘peacebuilding in small spaces’
The opening article reflects on the relations between governments and civil society, especially in peacbuilding. In another article, Roger W. Foster and Jayne S. Docherty, Eastern Mennonite University, point to situations when ‘smallness’ in itself is an advantage. James A. Paul, Global Policy Forum, and Henning Melber, Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation, in their respective articles, picture the UN’s and governments’ attitude towards civil society.

The University of Kent and University of Marburg are now accepting applications for the international double degree programme Peace and Conflict Studies for the 2013-2014 year. This international double award is jointly offered by the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent and the Centre for Conflict Studies at the University of Marburg. Upon successful completion of the programme students will be awarded an MA degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from Kent University and an MA degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Marburg.

Continuity and discontinuity characterise a (post-)conflict environment. Certain aspects of pre-war configurations persist throughout an armed conflict, others change drastically. In most cases, however, not least due to the intervention of external actors, the (post-)conflict configuration presents an opportunity for local and national actors to (re-)position themselves.
