On the fifth anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue asks: why should conflict mediation be a job just for men? Of the 61 senior UN staff who lead or deputise on peacemaking and peacebuilding missions, only four are currently women. Outside the UN, there is just one known and currently active Track One female mediator. HD Centre staff member Antonia Potter has produced an "HD Opinion" entitled "We the Women: why conflict mediation is not just a job for me" which offers reasons as to why women's participation is not only in the interests of equality, but in the interests of peace. It describes how the usual impediments cited to women's participation at the track one level are surmountable or even irrelevant, and suggests a range of practical options to counter discrimination and inertia.
Our hope in sharing this paper with you is to reinvigorate an important debate, and to catalyse the required leap from rhetoric to action across the range of institutions involved in Track One peacemaking. We would very much like to know your opinions too. Let us know what you think, and what other practicable options there may be for the UN, governments, regional organisations and NGOs to redress the balance - not just in favour of women, but in favour of peace.
