The report focuses mainly on international assistance to Guatemala provided after the signing of the Final Accords for a Firm and Lasting Peace in 1996. The report highlights the main developments in Guatemala's continuing democratization process and assesses the role and influence of international aid to civil society and government institutions in the fields of elections, human rights and media. Other post-conflict case studies in this so-called Democratic Transition project include Cambodia, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Uganda and El Salvador.
