The Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) is seeking to recruit a Researcher for a time-limited, part-time position (50 %), salary group 13 on the TV-AVH public service salary scale (equivalent to IIa BAT).
The position is limited to 18 months from October 1, in accordance with art. 2 of the German law on temporary employment for scientific professions (“Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz”). The central task of the successful applicant is the support of activities of the IFAR²- work on “global zero”. In addition, there is a possibility to prepare or pursue work on a dissertation in the areas of arms control and disarmament within the Working Program of the IFSH. Natural scientists are encouraged to apply.
The work programme, entitled 'Trans-nationalization of risks of violence as a challenge to European peace and security policy', focuses on the need for European security actors to adapt to take account of 'new'threats, and on these adaptation process themselves, including the possibility of new forms of 'security governance'. The revitalization of arms control and disarmament by US President Barack Obama has created new opportunities for global nuclear disarmament and conventional arms control in Europe, but also presents challenges for global and European peace and security policies.
The position will also entail:
- Support for the organization of the work of IFAR² as well as independent research for and writing of research papers and publications.
- Participation in activities to attract third party funds for research and advisory activities within the scope of the IFSH work programme.
- Active participation in tasks across the range of the IFSH's work as determined by the institute's director.
Requirements:
- Master's degree (or equivalence) in a relevant field with above average grades.
- Knowledge of core issues in international disarmament and arms control, as well as in European security either based on natural or social science expertise. Demonstrable knowledge in other areas of the IFSH work programme preferred.
- Excellent English; knowledge of German preferred; any other language would be an advantage.
- Good team skills; experience of public speaking; flexibility in work planning; teaching experience preferred.
